What the project investment will enable
Through investments in this offer, Altech will address the critical need for electricity in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where an estimated 79% of the population lives without power, by financing solar equipment, including lanterns and home systems.
The purchase of solar home systems (SHS) has had a significant positive impact on households, with 36% of households generating additional income and 85% engaging in more economic activities. Additionally, 64% of customers highlight that their children have more time to study, improving educational outcomes. Notably, twice as many women than men report improved financial well-being and increased leisure time, demonstrating the broader positive effects of SHS on household quality of life.
Altech serves a customer base who have no or unreliable access to electricity. Altech offers an attractive entry-level solar home system for lower-income, rural households to help them gain reliable electricity access, as well as urban households or shop owners who step up the electricity ladder by purchasing a solar home system and appliance kit. The company also successfully operates in conflict zones and runs several electrification projects in refugee camps.
Through its diverse product offering combined with short and long-term payment plans, Altech has a solar energy solution for every household in several income levels. Altech customers buy the products through a Pay As You Go model, making a small down payment and a series of instalment payments on plans tailored to their needs. Through their deep local knowledge and national distribution network Altech has established itself as a leading off-grid energy provider in the DRC.

Altech
Altech began when its co-founders, Washikala and Iongwa, witnessed an energy deficit in the Democratic Republic of Congo from a very personal standpoint. They became refugees as children during the Congolese civil war and recalled having “no money for kerosene.” And their story is not necessarily unique, as the company developed solar energy technologies to combat the lack of access to electricity that they say affects as much as 79% of the country.
Today, Altech’s products include solar lamps, solar home systems and clean cookstoves. They aim to end energy poverty for 50 million people by 2030. Their customers have felt the benefits in a myriad of ways. To date it is estimated that Altech have improved the lives of over 2.5 million people in DRC, abated over 480,000 tonnes of carbon, employed over 3,000 people and saved over £48m in energy costs.
Social and environmental impact
