A New Era of Electric Mobility for Africa
A solar journey through Africa with Roam
As we approach the target raise for the latest Roam bond offer on Energise Africa, we're sharing news of an epic journey: a Roam Air electric motorcycle has completed a historic 6,000-kilometre solar-powered journey from Nairobi, Kenya, to Stellenbosch, South Africa. This groundbreaking expedition showcases the power of African ingenuity and sustainable innovation.A journey powered by the sun
Starting on 29 September 2024, the Roam Air traversed Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia, and Botswana, finally arriving in Stellenbosch on October 16. This remarkable feat was a collaborative effort between Roam and Stellenbosch University's Faculty of Engineering, with crucial support from partners like SANEDI, Scatec, Charlie’s Travel, and Throttle Pitstop.
Accompanied by two solar-powered support vehicles, the expedition pushed the limits of electric mobility. The journey tested the Roam Air's drivetrain, portable dual batteries, and solar recharging capabilities under real-world African conditions. A highlight of the trip was the final day, where the Roam Air covered an impressive 1,000 kilometres in under 18 hours, travelling from Kimberley to Cape Agulhas, Africa's southernmost point.
A Vision for a Sustainable Future
"This ambitious journey represents a major leap in showcasing the potential of sustainable electric mobility across sub-Saharan Africa," said Thinus Booysen, Professor of Engineering and founder of the Electric Mobility Lab at Stellenbosch University. "Despite challenges like adverse weather and technical hurdles, the resilience of our team and the Roam Air motorcycle highlighted the power of innovation and collaboration."
This historic journey is more than just a technological achievement; it's a powerful symbol of Africa's potential to lead in sustainable transport. The expedition's success will be documented in a film, capturing the challenges, innovations, and unforgettable moments, including a new battery range record and a surprise encounter with elephants along the Zambezi River.
Roam: A Climate Innovation Leader
Roam's commitment to sustainable mobility has earned recognition beyond this remarkable journey. The company has been named a finalist for the Nairobi Climate Network Climate Awards in the Pioneering Climate Innovator category.
